The EPA’s proposal to ban the vast majority of new gasoline-and diesel-powered vehicles in less than 10 years is an extreme approach to environmental policy and it’s going to have huge consequences for United States consumers and our energy security. That’s why it’s so important for Congress to step in (which Ericka emailed about last week).
China dominates electric vehicle (EV) battery production (see below) and produces more than 50% of the world’s EVs. While investments in American EV production, batteries and infrastructure are growing significantly, we are not going to overtake China.
In fact, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas (aka the Dallas Fed) says all our investments through 2031 are likely to only bring the United States’ share of global battery production capacity to 11%. Banning cars and trucks that run on American-made, American-grown fuels means exponentially increasing our dependence on China.
Bills have been introduced in this Congress to stop the EPA from putting this de facto ban in place and to stop EPA from green-lighting California’s across-the-board ban on traditional cars and trucks. The catch is, Congress will only vote on these bills if they believe they’re a high enough priority. Using this link, contact Congressional leaders and urge them to bring these bills up for a vote. It’ll only take a second of your time but will make a big impact.
